From Scratch
On any given day of the week, my mom is baking something. Chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes, chiffon cake, the woman does it all. And she does it from scratch. My mom scorns cake mixes. "You can always tell," she contends, "when something's from out of the box.”

Blood Pressure
Melissa watched the luggage churning its way around the baggage carousel while she waited for her own forest green suitcase to appear. A rainbow-strapped duffel tumbled down the chute as if it had just been shot out of the birth canal. Parents and kids gathering up their bulging bags surrounded Melissa on all sides. She locked her knees...
